.:: About Mickey Sutherland

Mickey Sutherland was born in Boston USA, where his parents defied the Red Sox Nation by naming him after rival New York Yankees legend - Mickey Mantle. He spent most of his childhood in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Mick played ice hockey with the Strait Pirates in Port Hawkesbury NS, later moving on to play in Sarnia Ontario, Yarmouth NS, and then with the varsity team at St. Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick.

In 1981 he was granted a two year sports visa to play and promote ice hockey in Australia. He ran clinics, did public relations for the South Australian Ice Centre, and was voted MVP of the Adelaide Flyers of the Australian National League.

He returned to Nova Scotia where he worked for the NS Housing Commission and the media, before migrating back to Australia in 1987.

Sutherland was Media Director of the Adelaide Giants baseball team from 1993-96, and during the U.S. summer of ‘95 he worked in a similar role for the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league team in Great Falls, Montana.

He has won national media awards from both the Australian Baseball League and the National Basketball League for his coverage of Giants baseball and Adelaide 36ers basketball.

Mick staged popular sports card & memorabilia shows in South Australia and Victoria in the 1990's, and later operated Sutherland Sports and Sutherland Roller Hockey School to coincide with the introduction of inline hockey to Australia.

Other significant projects have included orchestrating “live” American baseball on Adelaide radio, NBL and AFL collectors card sets, and various yearbooks and programs.

He also had short term or contracted stints with: South Australian Ice Hockey Association (AUS), Messenger News (AUS), 5AA Radio (AUS), 5EBI-FM (AUS), Australian Baseball Review (AUS), ABC Radio (AUS), West Adelaide WNBL Basketball (AUS), CJLS Radio (CAN), Scotia Sun (CAN), Halifax Daily News (CAN), Bedford Viewpoint (CAN), CIGO Radio (CAN).

From 2003-08 he worked in the hotel industry in Adelaide as a Night Manager/Auditor.

Sutherland has a Public Relations Certificate IV -Adelaide Institute (1994), Radio Broadcast Diploma-Lambton College (Canada–1977), and Business Management Certificate IV (2008).
